In E&P databases, every well and wellbore needs a unique identifier. PPDM supports the industry’s efforts to improve well identification systems.

This responds to the increasing complexity of well construction, the rapidly expanding volumes and types of data, and the need for unambiguous exchange of well data among businesses, governments and computer systems.



 

 

US Well Number Standard

This standard is for the identification of petroleum wells in the USA. The US Well Number is a 12-digit number assigned to every wellbore. It includes the unique identity of a well, and is a foundation for the management and exchange of all well information.

Canadian Well Identification System Standard

The Canadian Well Identification System (CWIS) has three related identifiers to recognize every well, wellbore and well reporting stream. It is intended chiefly for databases and computer systems that support business processes for all stakeholders.

Global Framework for Well Identification

There are many systems for well identification. Some are not suitable for digital databases, requiring data managers to develop their own identifiers. When PPDM launched a work group project to revise the well identifier for the USA in 2011, a preliminary step was to develop a framework of general principles that can be useful anywhere.
